Description: On the left of the image a woman stands facing the wind, her clothes blowing and her hands open to the wind. Beyond her on a body of water are sailboats under full sail. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712) was responsible for drawing this emblem and composed the poem that accompanies it. The etching was executed by Jan Luiken or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708), who had used this image in an earlier work, which may be found in the Digital Image Archive under the call number 1699Weig. The attendant scripture text is John 3:8.

Poem:
Cool little wind, that one does not see,
But rather enjoys through feeling,
When I follow thee with my thoughts,
What thy origin might have been
Then I think of the Holy Spirit,
That flows from the Father’s power.
How that breath was also so beautifully
By Jesus his beloved Son,
Blown upon his favorites.
While the pleasing word,
Was heard from his lips,
So that they received the Holy Spirit.
As one also finds the remembrance,
Of a strongly driven wind,
Found in the House of the Apostles,
Where the modest quiet Group
Was unanimous in expectation,
Until that Comforter was sent to them.
Thou then; Source of the wind,
Whence the outflow is found on earth,
Coolest thou the face of the Souls;
That in the land of flesh and blood,
Must suffer so many hot days,
As a Chase follows it closely.
