Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. An angel swiftly flees the presence of the supplicant, who bids it hasten like the stag seen in the background. This scene represents the supplicant’s desire for the divine presence to depart from her, as its radiance is overwhelming for her.
