Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. A woman stand before a curtain on which shadows are cast from a light shining behind her. On the other side of the curtain stands an angelic figure, a representation of God. The entire scene figures the supplicant’s frustrated desire to behold God face to face, which is confined to dim intimations of God’s being on earth.
