Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. The supplicant rides on the back of a stag that seeks to relieve its thirst and the pain of its body in the waters of the fountain in the background, whose streams pour from the stigmata of the angelic figure. The stag serves as a symbol of the supplicant’s desire for God’s spiritual nourishment.
