Author: Hugo, Herman, 1588-1629
Image Title: Book III, Emblem x
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. An angel has come to release the supplicant imprisoned in a large birdcage. The prison represents the supplicant’s regard for the body as a compound that prevents her from enjoying the freedom of heaven. A smaller birdcage hangs from the limb above, from which its captive has flown and soars the skies.
