Author: Hugo, Herman, 1588-1629
Image Title: Book III, Emblem vi
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. The supplicant rests on top of a globe, the locations of great European cities marked on its face. She reaches with her left hand toward a celestial globe containing an angel. This allegorical configuration represents the supplicant’s contention that, unless God is present to her, she cannot enjoy the treasures of earth or even those of heaven.
