Book III, Emblem iv

Book Title: Pia desideria : emblematis elegiis & affectibus SS. Patrum illustrata / authore Hermanno Hugone Societatis Iesu ; ad Vrbanum VIII, Pont. Max.

Author: Hugo, Herman, 1588-1629

Image Title: Book III, Emblem iv

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. The woman holds a compass whose north points to the angel, which represents God, the woman’s beloved. The compass’ orientation represents the assurance that God’s love affords. The sunflower to the right of the woman figures the supplicant’s constant attentiveness to God, as the sunflower’s blossom naturally follows the course of the sun across the sky.
