Book III, Emblem iii

Book Title: Pia desideria : emblematis elegiis & affectibus SS. Patrum illustrata / authore Hermanno Hugone Societatis Iesu ; ad Vrbanum VIII, Pont. Max.

Author: Hugo, Herman, 1588-1629

Image Title: Book III, Emblem iii

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. The supplicant and her beloved, who assumes an angelic form, rest in a large garden and each hold a crown of flowers over the other’s head, the two of them representing the love that God and the supplicant share. She chooses this love over its earthly counterpart, which never fails in failing the lover.
