Author: Hugo, Herman, 1588-1629
Image Title: Book III, Emblem ii
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. The supplicant having swooned under an apple tree, two maidens come to attend her. They offer her the sweet aroma of fragrant flowers and succulent fruit that might quench her thirst, but none of these can quell her desire for her beloved. She falls asleep in the hope that she will awake in the arms of her beloved. The entire scene represents the sickness that, through its effect, brings the soul closer to God.
