Author: Hugo, Herman, 1588-1629
Image Title: Book II, Emblem ix
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. The supplicant finds relief from the elements in the shade of a tree from which hangs a crucified angel, a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice. The relief afforded by the tree is a reflection of that which Christ offers to humankind.
