Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. A woman awakes in her bed to find that her beloved is gone. In vain, she follows after the one carrying the torch, though the beloved, in angelic form, peaks form behind the bed’s curtains. This represents the misdirected desire for the beloved spoken of in the poem .
