Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. A woman carrying a walking stick takes the hand of the angel at her side, who also carries a walking stick. They are headed out of the city gate into the countryside. The angel represents God as the lover, the entire scene the retreat of the supplicant from society in order to enjoy the intimacy of God’s love.
