Author: Hugo, Herman, 1588-1629
Image Title: Book II, Emblem vi
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. An angel holds two tablets, on which the images of two hearts are inscribed. Resembling traditional depictions of the Decalogue, these tablets signify God’s desire not for external observance, but for a well-disposed heart. The supplicant at the angel’s feet holds her heart out to the angel and extends her other hand toward her assortment of cosmetics and accessories in a gesture of rejection .
