Author: Hugo, Herman, 1588-1629

Image Title: Book II, Emblem iv

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. A woman kneels on the ground in mortal fear before an angel wearing the mask of a lion and holding a thunderbolt in one hand and a birch rod in the other. At her feet a hare paws her dress. The hare represents those things unworthy of the fear they evoke and the masked angel the numinous dread caused by the awesome thought of God.
