Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. The supplicant weeps and tries to indicate the time shown on the sundial to the angel who is pulling her away. This scene alludes to the supplicant’s claim that the pitiful brevity of human life does not warrant God’s intense scrutiny .
