Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. An angel sits at an accounting bench and writes in his ledger. Before the bench stands the supplicant held in custody by personified Justice with a sword and pair of scales in hand. The Ten Commandments hang on the wall above the angel’s chair. This scene figures God’s bringing the supplicant to judgment as to whether she has done him justice with what she has been given.
