Image Title: Book I, Emblem ix

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements and metaphors of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. A human figure lies caught in a snare set by Death, here depicted as a skeleton. About the captive are strewn coins, a lyre, and drinking vessels filled with wine, which function as bait in Death’s designs. In the background, menacing demonic figures run alongside Greek deities. Aphrodite carries a torch in one hand, by which she sets the forest ablaze, and a rope in the other, the opposite end of which is held by her son Hermes. To their right is Bacchus carrying his horn and decanter of wine. These three represent the passions whereby one becomes ensnared. The spider’s web in the upper-left corner signifies the subtlety and near-imperceptibility of Death’s snares.
