Author: Hugo, Herman, 1588-1629

Image Title: Book I, Emblem viii

Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements and metaphors of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. Two women, each strand of their hair a stream of tears, weep over their sin, the foremost of whom has tears flowing from her hands as well. In the background, the face of a human figure becomes a plain over which briny streams flow. These exaggerated depictions of weeping figure the supplicant’s claim that even such an intense, tearful lament would not be enough to cover over her iniquity.
