Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements and metaphors of its ensuing scripture citation and poetic lament. An angel turns its face from a woman who tries to pull away the hand that shields the angel’s countenance from her gaze. The angel’s action represents the withdrawal of the presence of God from the supplicant.
