Image Title: Book I, Emblem v
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. An angel working a potter’s wheel sculpts a human figure out of clay. The human subject sitting opposite the angel blows into a handful of dust. Together these two activities represent the primal acts of God’s creation of humankind – namely, its formation from the dust of the earth and its animation by the breath of God.
