Author: Hugo, Herman, 1588-1629
Image Title: Book I, Emblem iii
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poetic lament. Infirm, the speaker lies in bed attended by an angel, who places its hands on the speaker’s forehead and wrist to ascertain the nature of the infirmity. The sickbed and patient represent the speaker’s withered state and spiritual malaise, the attending angel God “the Great Physician”.
