Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. A child in a jester’s costume rides about on a toy horse as he plays with a whirligig and carries a kitten in a woven basket. The angel covers its face in shame and points heavenward. The child represents the foolishness and vain striving so prevalent in human toil.
