Author: Hugo, Herman, 1588-1629
Image Title: Book I, Emblem i
Description: The pictura of this emblem by the Jesuit priest Herman Hugo (1588 – 1629 CE) allegorically figures thematic elements of its ensuing scripture citation and poem. The night in which the two subjects find themselves represents the sin and ignorance that darken the speaker’s being and render him blind. The angel bearing the small lamp and pointing heavenward with his hand represents God’s illumination of the mind and call to seek after him.
