Book Title: Heliotropium : seu, Conformatio humanae voluntatis cum divina ... explicata. / ab Hieremia Drexelio
Author: Drexel, Jeremias, 1581-1638
Image Title: Conformity with Divine Will
Scripture Reference:
Description: Kneeling beside a grounded cross with a cup placed on it, a nimbate figure and a child share a hug. The title’s theme, human conformity with divine will, is symbolized not only in this embrace, but also in the two hearts enveloped in wings, lily, and sword at the upper left corner: inscriptions “Ego tibi” (“I to you”) and “Tu mihi” (“You to me”) are united in a single heart above another heart inscribed twice with “Fiat” (“Be done”). The caption, a quotation of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, expresses a similar unity of purpose: “Non mea, sed tua voluntas fiat” (“Not my will, but thy will be done” from Luke 22:42, though verse 24 is cited).
