Description: The printer’s device of Manuel de Sande (act. 1627-1633) features the device of the Society of Jesus, or the Jesuits, established by Saint Ignatius Loyola featuring the symbols IHS (the initials of Jesus), a cross, the sun, and three nails (symbolizing those used to crucify Jesus). As well, the banner across the bottom features the Latin inscription, “A FRUCTU FRUMENTI ET VINI ET OLEI,” which is an excerpt from Psalm 4:8 in the Latin Vulgate which is a reference to Psalm 4:6-7 in the New International Version that reads, “Many, LORD, are asking, “Who will being us prosperity?”/ Let the light of your face shine on us. / Fill my heart with joy / when their grain and new wine abound”.
