Description: This print shows the ceremonies that the Dutch trader and explorer Pieter de Maares (1770-1856 CE) observed when a community in the Gold Coast buried one of its dead. “A” is the grave in which the deceased will be buried; “B” shows the community’s ways of mourning; “C” is the ritual performed when the deceased has been buried; and “D”shows them going into the water in order to wash their bodies after climbing over the grave, after which they all go home to recreate.
