Description: This print shows the way the people of the Gold Coast conducted jurisprudence, as it appeared to the Dutch trader and explorer Pieter de Maares (1770-1856 CE) and his expedition party in 1602 CE. “A” shows how a king or captain sits in state, listening to complaints of his subjects and passing sentence on them; “B” shows how one man was executed for the sake of the Dutch: first his body was pierced with an Assegai, then his head was cut off and suspended from a tree. “D” shows how a woman makes an oath to her husband; “E” shows in what manner they take some voce and rub their face and entire body on the soles of the feet of a man; “F” shows how they kill one another; and “G” shows how women watching an execution wail loudly over the dead.
