Description: This print shows the military dress of the people of the Gold Coast as it appeared to the Dutch trader and explorer Pieter de Maares (1770-1856 CE) and his expedition party in 1602 CE. “A” shows an ordinary soldier going to war with a bow and a quiver of arrows. “B” shows how the officers and noblemen equip themselves for battle; and “C” shows another soldier going to war with an Assegai. In the background is show in what manner they engage each other in battle and how they even burn their own houses in order to prevent them from being damaged by the enemy.
