Image Title: About Their Holy Day, Their Beliefs and Their Gods, Which They Call Fetisso

Description: This print shows some of the religious practice of the people of the Gold Coast as they appeared to the Dutch trader and explorer Pieter de Maares (1770-1856 CE) and his expedition party. “A” shows a priest standing by a tree with his two wives and engaging in what seems to be an ecstatic dance; “B” shows them performing another prayer, praying that their deity would send them material blessing; “C” shows the articles involved in their form of ritual exorcism; and “D” shows how they meet on Tuesday, their holy day to baptize and exorcise children.
