Image Title: Portrait and Medals of Silvestro Valiero
Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Silvestro Valiero (1630-1700), who reigned from 1694 to 1700. Valiero’s coat of arms portrays an eagle in a countercolored field. Three medals appear on this page: Valiero’s osella (top pair of coin faces) depicts him acceping the Venetian Republic’s banner from the enthroned Saint Mark. The reverse shows a flying eagle, whose beak holds a scroll inscribed “Boni eventvs.” The legend above reads “Terra mariq.” Two islands appear below in the background, a tree on each. The legend below “Chios nar.” recalls the 1694 Venetian capture of the island of Chios. Valiero’s second osella bears an obverse similar to the second. On its reverse, two eagles, each adorned with a ducal cap, fly toward the smiling sun. The legend reads “Exemplo mostrante viam” (“Showing the way by example”). The third medal commemorates Dogaressa Elisabetta Querini’s taking of the Coronation Oath. The obverse bears a bust of her, while the reverse contains an inscription to commemorate the rare occasion.
