Image Title: Portrait and Medal of Carlo Contarini

Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Carlo Contarini (1580-1656), who reigned from 1655 to 1656. His coat of arms portrays an eagle with a fleur-de-lis on its belly. The medal faces on each side of the portrait constitute Contarini’s only osella; its obverse depicts Contarini receiving the Venetian Republic’s banner from Saint Mark, and its reverse contains a sunflower. The mintmaster, Franco Corner, has placed his initials at the bottom of the obverse.
