Image Title: Portrait and Medals of Giovanni Cornaro I

Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Giovanni Cornaro I (1551-1629), who reigned from 1625 to 1629. Cornaro’s coat of arms is vertically quartered: the first two quarters are further divided horizontally, containing an assortment of crosses and three lions rampant. The top coin is a 1647-minted bronze medal commissioned by the Doge’s son Cardinal Federico Cornaro to pay respect to his father’s memory. The obverse (left) features a bust of Doge Cornaro in ducal garb, and the reverse bears a legend “Æternæ in Patrem Optimvm observantiæ memoriam extare volvit in hoc metallo vvltv eivs excvso Federicvs Card. Cornelivs ROMAE An. Dni. MDCXXXXVI.” The bottom coin, Giovanni I’s 1629 osella, depicts, on the obverse, the Doge humbly accepting the Venetian Republic’s banner from the seated Saint Mark, and, on the reverse, the Doge kneeling at an altar, where a cross and relics are visible. The legend on the reverse reads: “Flores apparver in terra nostra.” The mintmaster, Domenigo Bassadona, has his initials engraved at the bottom of the obverse.
