Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Francesco Contarini (1555-1624), who reigned from 1623 to 1624. The accompanying coin is Contarini’s 1623 osella. On the reverse (left), the central legend commemorates his first year, while the encircling inscription alludes to Venice’s founding, traditionally dated back to 420. The obverse (right) depicts Doge Contarini kneeling, humbly accepting the Venetian banner from the seated Saint Mark.
