Image Title: Portrait and Medal of Leonardo Donato
Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Leonardo Donato (1536-1612), who reigned from 1606 to 1612. Donato, among others, persistently asserted Venice’s autonomy against the papacy, incurring an interdict in 1606. His coat of arms contains several horizontal bands, topped by a row three four-petaled flowers. The coin features the Doge humbly accepting a banner from Saint Mark, and an image of Saint Justina of Padua beneath an inscription: “Memor ero tvi. Ivstina.” The mintmaster, Constantin Pasqualigo, has his initials placed at the bottom center of the obverse.
