Image Title: Portrait and Medals of Marin Grimani

Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Marin Grimani, who reigned from 1595 to 1605. Grimani earned a fortune as a merchant and earned a generous reputation for entertaining poor guests. His coat of arms contains a pattern of vertical stripes. Three medals appear on this page: The top medal is an osella minted and distributed to commemorate the grandiose coronation of Grimani’s wife Morosina Morosini-Grimani in 1597. The obverse (left) contains a bust of the Dogaressa wearing the ducal cap, circumscribed by her Latin name “Mavrocena Mavrocena.” The reverse (right) features an enwreathed inscription: “Mvnvs Mavrocenae Mavrocenae Grimanae Dvcissae 1597.” The second medal’s obverse features the winged lion of Saint Mark walking over waves and holding a sword in its left paw. The reverse features the crests of the Free State of the Three Leagues (now called Graubünden), a Swiss league allied with Venice. The left insignia, a cross, represents the Grey League; the center insignia, a goat rampant, represents the League of God’s House; and the right insignia, a male figure, represents the League of Ten Jurisdictions. The third medal (the exterior coin faces of the bottom row) is Grimani’s 1595 osella. The obverse features the Doge humbly accepting the banner of the Venetian Republic from Jesus. The legend reads “Bened. Aia. mea. dno. Marin. Grim. Dvx.” On the reverse, the winged lion of Saint Mark appears in the rampant stance and holds a small cross in its right paw. The legend “Sydera cordis” surrounds the image. The engraver or mintmaster’s initials, H. V., have been placed at the bottom center of the obverse. The final medal (the interior faces of the bottom row), a soldino, portrays the Doge kneeling with a banner in hand and the lion of Saint Mark, facing, holding a book.
