Image Title: Portrait and Medals of Pasquale Cicogna
Scripture Reference:
Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Pasquale Cicogna (1509-1595), who reigned from 1585 to 1595. His coat of arms features a stork, a reference to his family’s name. This page contains engravings of three coins: The obverse (left) of the top coin, Cicogna’s 1590 osella, depicts the Doge humbly accepting a banner from Saint Mark, while an angel swoops down to crown Cicogna with the ducal cap. The reverse (right) portrays the three crosses at Calvary, standing over some shrubbery. The legend reads “Hinc salvs et resvrrectio. Anno VI.” The reverse (left) of the second medal, a special 1593 minting, shows the winged lion of Saint Mark wielding a sword with its front paw. The obverse (right) features an outline of the fortress town Palmanova, commissioned for construction in 1593. The outer legend reads “Fori jvlii Italiae et Chris. fidei propvgnacvlvm,” and the inner inscription reads “In hoc signo tvta.” The bottom medal commemorates the renovation of the Basilica of San Pietro di Castello. The obverse (left) depicts two figures grasping a tall pole topped with a cross: Saint Peter (left) holding the keys of salvation and Saint Mark holding a sword. The legend quotes Biblical scripture, reading “Tv es Petr. Et svp. hanc Petr. aedificabo eccl. meam.” The reverse (right) bears an inscription summarizing the renovation: “Aed. sacr. Castellanam iam vetvstate collabentem Lavretii Privli Ven. pathe. pietas. restitvit. svi pathvs. An. IIII. Clemente. VIII. P. M. Pasc. Ciconia D. MDXCIIII”.
