Image Title: Portrait and Medal of Sebastian Venier
Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Sebastian Venier (1496-1578), who reigned for almost ten months between 1577 and 1578. Heralded as “The Hero of Lepanto” for his role in the Holy League’s 1571 victory over the Turks, Venier received the Golden Rose from Pope Gregory XIII. His coat of arms contains a pattern of horizontal stripes, with a small angel visible above the top stripe. The coin on this page, Venier’s only osella, depicts Venier on the obverse (left), offering a palm branch to the seated Saint Mark while humbly accepting the banner of the Venetian Republic. An angel swoops downward to bestow the ducal cap. The reverse (right) shows Jesus hovering in the clouds, overlooking Venice and its bustling harbor. The legend “1577 Magna Dei Misericordia. svp. nos” refers to a respite in a recent plague that swept over North Italy .
