Image Title: Portrait and Medals of Marcantonio Trevisan
Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Marcantonio Trevisan, who reigned for about eleven months between 1553 and 1554. Trevisan possessed a saintly reputation, well-regarded for his piety and charity to the poor. Trevisan’s coat of arms contains an image of a fence. This page contains engravings of two medals commissioned by Doge Trevisan. The upper medal bears a bust of the Doge and a wreath, which contains a Latin inscription recording the length of Trevisan’s reign and the year of his death: “Marcvs Antonivs Trivixano Dei gratia Dvx Venetiarvm etc. vixit ano. I. in principatv obit. MDLIIII.” The lower medal, Trevisan’s 1553 osella, depicts Doge Trevisan humbly accepting a banner of the Venetian Republic from the enthroned Saint Mark, along with an inscription commemorating Trevisano’s first and only year as doge.
