Image Title: Portrait and Coins of Pietro Lando

Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Pietro Lando (1462-1545), who reigned from 1539 to 1545. Before becoming doge, Lando was a distinguished general in the navy and a longtime member civil government. His coat of arms is divided into quarters. Two coin-medals appear in the image: The upper coin, an osella, depicts Doge Lando on the obverse (left) humbly accepting a banner from the enthroned Saint Mark. The reverse contains a Latin inscription commemorating the second year of Lando’s dogeship. The engraver or mintmaster’s monogram, F. V., has been placed at the bottom of the obverse. The second coin, a quattrino, shows Lando standing alone with a banner in his hand, and the winged lion of Saint Mark holding a book.
