Image Title: Medal Commemorating Doge Francesco Foscari

Description: This bronze medal was commissioned after Venetian Doge Francesco Foscari’s (1373-1457) death. The front contains a portrait of Doge Foscari in ducal garb, beneath the legend “Franciscvs. Foscari. Dvx.” The reverse depicts a female figure, representing Venice, sitting on a throne. She bears a sword in her right hand and a shield emblazoned with a lion in her left. At her feet appear two lions, and two figures of children. A legend reads “Venetia Magna.” The engraver or mintmaster’s monogram, A. N., has been placed at the bottom.
