Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Pietro Orseolo I (928-987), who reigned from 976 to 978. In 978, Orseolo secretly left Venice for the abbey of Cuxa, and he spent the rest of his life in France as a monastic hermit. Pope Clement XII ratified Orseolo’s sainthood in 1731. Orseolo’s coat of arms features two dancing bears.
