Image Title: Portrait of Pietro Candiano IV

Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Pietro Candiano IV (r. 959-976), who succeeded his father Pietro III. Before becoming doge, Pietro IV usurped his father’s throne and was sent in exile, but his offenses were forgiven and he was recalled to Venice to succeed his father. Even as doge, however, Pietro IV steadily earned disfavor among the Venetians and died in an insurrection, along with his young son.
