Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Giustiano Participazio (r. 827-829) who succeeded his father Agnello. Tradition accords to Giustiano the act of bequeathing funds for the construction of the Church of Saint Mark, which would become Saint Mark’s Basilica. Giustiano’s coat of arms features a lion rampant over a field of diagonal stripes.
