Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Obelerio degli Antenori (d. c. 829), who reigned from 804 to 810. Aristocrats deposed and exiled Obelerio after he placed Venice under Frankish protection. Two decades later, he returned to Venice but was captured and executed for attempting to regain power. Obelerio’s coat of arms features a coronet.
