Description: A portrait of Venetian Doge Orso Ipato (r. 726-737). With support from Pope Gregory II, Orso volunteered Venice to fight alongside the Byzantine Empire to help defend the Exarch of Ravenna from the Lombards, earning himself the honorary Byzantine title “hypatos.” Orso’s coat of arms features a cross above a field divided horizontally into halves of different colors.
