Scripture Reference:

Description: Under a tree, the farmer, surrounded by cattle, chickens and a duck, carries a milk bucket. A farm, two pigs feeding from a trough and a woman cleaning butter churns are in the left background; in the distance, a man plows a field. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 65:9-13 though Luiken quotes Psalm 65: 10-14. Motto: First sowed, /Then reaped. Poem: Through farming, with the Lord’s blessing, /Is much benefit gained for man: / But he who desires a rich harvest, /Should console himself here with a little toiling, /On the field of hope and faith; /His fruit will not be consumed in eternity. (Translation by Josephine V. Brown, with editorial assistance from William G. Stryker).
