Scripture Reference:

Description: In his laboratory, an elderly chemist, wearing a house robe and holding a pair of tongs in one hand, sits in front of two stoves while watching a number of retorts. A basket on the floor next to him is filled with wood or peat for the stove; bottles of liquids and chemicals line the shelves. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Romans 6:6-7. Motto: He who releases you, /Is your friend. Poem: The coarse substance when tested / Gives his spirit, of the very best; /So Wisdom searches through suffering, /For love’s quality and wish, /The spiritual essence from man, /To separate it, from the coarse part. (Translation by Josephine V. Brown, with editorial assistance from William G. Stryker).
