Scripture Reference:

Description: A young man plays the lute while tapping the beat with his left foot; next to him, a viola-da-gamba rests against a clavichord where two men are seated. From the open doorway, a dog looks at the plaza containing a fountain decorated with a Neptune like figure. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 33:1-5. Motto: Is the little drop sweet, / Insist on the flood. Poem: The rhythm and music of men, /As lovely as one could ever wish, /Is only a sample of the sound, /That arises from the angels’ choir, /For the eternal source of hearing, / Where joy never ends. (Translation by Josephine V. Brown, with editorial assistance from William G. Stryker).
