Scripture Reference:

Description: A rich client wearing a wig sits in front of a large tapestry depicting trees and luxuriously dressed women, while the tapestry maker draws his attention to the foliage of a tree; in the background, an assistant works on a loom. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Proverbs 23:5. Motto: However beautifully made, /Death does separate. Poem: The marble hall, however beautiful it may be, / Delightful through tapestry /Is only a hut of dust and earth: / But the house not made by hands / For him, who longs for heaven, /Is an abode of higher value. (Translation by Josephine V. Brown, with editorial assistance from William G. Stryker).
