Scripture Reference:

Description: Under a tree, the glue maker lowers a large wicker hamper into the water with the aid of support rails. On the opposite side of the water, other glue makers are at work and there is a large rack for drying animal hides. The Dutch artist and poet, Jan Luiken (1649-1712), was responsible for drawing this emblem and for creating the motto and poem that follow. Jan Luiken and/or his son Casper Luiken (1672-1708) were responsible for its etching. The attendant scripture text is Psalm 63:8 though Luiken cites Psalm 63:9. Motto: Fasten your soul/ To the eternal good. Poem: The slime, yielded from the abyss, /Makes us stick to the earth like glue, /That sinks heavily toward hell: /It’s everyone’s time to tear loose, /And to approve of the adherence to God, /That is an exalted ascension.
